Lady Saints quell Hurricanes, 82-79, in overtime

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − In a game that saw 16 lead changes and nine ties it came down to converting free throws and open jumpers in the extra session. Sarah Hately (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports HS) scored eight of Flagler’s 11 points in overtime, including hitting a pair of free throws to put the Lady Saints ahead, in leading Flagler to an 82-79 win over Georgia Southwestern University of Americus Friday night at Flagler Gym.

With the Lady Saints down 77-76, Hately drove the ball down the court and induced a shooting foul on a Georgia Southwestern player with 2:08 to go. She calmly stepped to the line and sank a pair of free throw to put the Lady Saints up 78-77. The Hurricanes turned the ball over on the next possession and Hately sank a pull up jumper from the elbow to push the lead to three points.

Georgia Southwestern’s Sophia Small, on the next trip down the court, grabbed a missed three-pointer by teammate Athena Santos, and was fouled on the put back attempt. Small sank both shots from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to one point, 80-79, with just 1:22 left in overtime. Both teams exchanged missed shots on successive times down the court, but Meaggan Anderson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) grabbed an offensive board on a missed 3-pointer with 31 seconds left. After a timeout, Hately was fouled on the inbounds pass at halfcourt. Again, Hately sank a pair of free throws to ice the game, 82-79. The Hurricanes called a timeout with nine seconds on the clock. A 3-point attempt by small went off the rim and caromed into the right corner where she collected the rebound and tossed up a desperation 3-point attempt that failed to hit the rim and the game was over.

Caren Fiorillo (Meadville, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) tallied 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from 3-point range for Flagler (5-3). Her six three-pointers ties her career high. Brittney Garmon (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine HS) added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jamie Allenbaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Virginia Wesleyan College) chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds. Alicia Ramsdell (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) added 10 points in a reserve role.

Garmon’s only two free throw shots in the entire game proved to be important. Trailing 71-69 with less than a minute to play, Garmon stole the ball on the wing from Santos and was then fouled by Santos. Garmon toed the line and sank both free throws tying the game at 71-all. After a missed 3-pointer by Small, Allenbaugh collected the rebound and triggered the fast break with an outlet pass to Hately. With just five seconds left in regulation, Hately pulled up with an eight-foot jumper that just rimmed out at the horn.

Small led Georgia Southwestern (4-5) with 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half and overtime periods. She also added nine rebounds. Arlicia McCain added 13 points and 12 rebounds while Lola Farley chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds. Candace Driggers came off the bench to add 13 points.

The Hurricanes dominated the rebounding, holding a 48-31 advantage over the Lady Saints. Georgia Southwestern also had 23 offensive boards to Flagler’s six.

Flagler hosts Florida Southern College at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Flagler Gym. The game precedes the men’s contest against Saint Leo University. Georgia Southwestern, which announced last week that it will join the Peach Belt Athletic Conference and NCAA Division II as a provisional member next year, is at Southern Polytechnic on Dec. 1.
