Saints escape with 81-70 win over Florida College

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. − Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) scored a game-high 20 points and added seven rebounds to lead No. 24 Flagler College to a 81-70 win over a stubborn Florida College team in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at Carr Gymnasium.

Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) added 16 points and 10 rebounds while Kyle Cregan (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) added 16 points, 12 of those coming from four 3-point baskets. Jon Matthews (Daytona Beach, Fla./Atlantic HS) chipped in with 14 points, 10 of those points came off of successful free throws for Flagler (5-1).

The Saints trailed the Falcons for the first 10-plus minutes of the first half, but took a 20-19 lead with 10:16 left on a Matthews 12-foot jumper. The Saints would never trail again. A Borstelmann jumper in the lane would give Flagler its biggest lead in the first half, 43-31. The Saints would take a 43-37 lead into the break.

A 23-7 run early in the second half pushed the Saints to a 66-46 lead with 10:30 to play. In the run, Flagler made 9-of-14 field goal attempts and the defense held Florida College to 2-of-16 shooting from the floor.

However, the Falcons would go on a 16-2 run to cut the deficit to six points (68-62) with just 5:25 to go. The Falcon defense held the Saints to 0-for-6 shooting, including a stretch of 5:50 with no made field goals, and forced four turnovers. In contrast, Florida College sank 5-of-7 shots.

The Saints would score the next seven of eight points to put the game away.

Tommy Nichols poured in 17 points and dished out seven assists for Florida College (3-4). Jonathan Fox and Tommy Atherton each scored 14 points for the Falcons.

Flagler committed 25 turnovers but Florida College could only convert them into 17 points.

Flagler takes on Edward Waters College Monday night a 7 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
