Pride holds off Lady Saints, 77-70
 
DEMOREST, Ga. − Staci Humphrey poured in a game-high 31 points and added eight rebounds and eight assists to lead NCAA Division III Greensboro (N.C.) College to a 77-70 win over NAIA Division II Flagler College in the opening round of the third annual Piedmont College Tip-Off Classic Friday night at the Johnny Mize Athletic Center.
 
Sirlena Moore added 17 points and 13 rebounds for Greensboro in its season opener. Alison Blackmon chipped in 10 points while Bobbie Barnes tallied nine points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
The Pride raced out to a quick 20-6 lead and would lead by as many as 19 (35-16) in the first half. The Lady Saints would close the half on a 19-6 run to draw to within six points (41-35) at the break. Caren Fiorillo (Meadville, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) tallied 13 points in the opening half for Flagler (3-3) but Humphrey deposited 16 points and Moore recorded 13 more for Greensboro. Fiorillo scored 10 of Flagler’s first 16 points in the opening 10 minutes.
 
A jumper by Humphrey gave Greensboro a 58-48 lead with 12:37 remaining, but Flagler would counter with a 12-5 run to pull to within three points (63-60) with 7:19 left. Meredith Tehan (Frederick, Md./Pedro Menendez HS) stole a pass and hit a pull up jumper for the Lady Saints to make the score 63-60. Flagler could not get any closer.
 
Fiorillo led Flagler with a season-high 26 points and Christy Forsyth (Tallahassee, Fla./Amos P. Godby HS) added 10 points coming off the bench. Sarah Hately (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports HS) added 11 assists.
 
Greensboro, an NCAA Division III Tournament team a year ago, outrebounded Flagler 50-31.
 
Flagler will take on Texas Lutheran University at 2 p.m. Saturday.
