LAKE WALES, Fla. − Josh Jackson scored a game-high 24 points and also added four steals as Warner Pacific College of Portland, Ore., downed No. 24 Flagler College 89-80 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at the Turner Athletic Center on the campus of Warner Southern College.
Nate Menefee added 16 points and Garland Perry came off the bench to tack on 13 points and rebounds for Warner Pacific (4-0). Jeff Eischen tallied 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots.
The Warriors ran out to a quick 18-5 lead and then withstood a 17-5 run by the Saints to close the gap to 25-22 with 8:17 to go. Warner Pacific would lead by as many as 11 points in the first half, before going into the break with a 42-34 lead.
Early in the second half, the Warriors went on a 20-8 run to hold a commanding 68-48 lead with 10:36 remaining after a Scott Gallagher fastbreak layup. The Saints would answer with a 22-7 run that would pull Flagler to within five (78-73) with 4:42 left after a Jon Matthews (Daytona Beach, Fla./Atlantic HS) layup. Warner Pacific would go up, again, by as many as 11, but the Saints, again, fought back to within five points (85-80) with 1:01 to go. The Warriors put the game away by sinking four free throws in the last minute of play.
Matthews led Flagler (4-1) with 20 points and five steals. Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) added 16 points and eight rebounds while Bryan Borstelamann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) chipped in with 16 points and nine rebounds. Ben De La Cruz (Orlando, Fla./University HS) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Warriors forced 24 Saint turnovers and converted them into 32 points.
Flagler travels to Temple Terrace tomorrow to take on Florida College at 7 p.m.
