Saints blast Suns, 102-61
KISSIMMEE, Fla. − 24th-ranked (NAIA Division II) Flagler College fought off a stubborn Florida Christian College team in the first half en route to a 102-61 win Tuesday night.
Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) led Flagler (4-0) with a game-high 19 points and also added five assists and five rebounds. Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ben De La Cruz (Orlando, Fla./University HS) added 16 points and nine rebounds while Lee Wise (Rockledge, Fla./Brevard Christian School) chipped in with 10 points, seven assists and five steals. Marquis Johnson (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) tacked on 10 points for the Saints.
Flagler, who defeated Florida Christian 107-29 a week ago, struggled in the opening minutes. The Suns took an early 5-4 lead on a 3-pointer by Rob Janikowski and then took an 11-10 lead on a trey by Kenny Backhaus with 13:40 to go in the half. From that point, Flagler went on a 24-5 run that covered nearly seven minutes to pull away with an 18-point advantage (34-16). In that span, the Saint defense forced 10 Sun turnovers.
The Saints were whistled for 26 fouls, and the Suns converted 23-of-32 free throw attempts. Flagler dominated the boards out rebounding the smaller Florida Christian team 46-27.
Backhaus led Florida Christian (0-9) with 16 points and Dave Thomas added 11.
Flagler takes on Warner Pacific College of Portland, Ore., Friday night at 7 p.m. in a game played at Warner Southern College in Lake Wales.
