Bees defend region title with 3-1 win over Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − The Savannah College of Art and Design Bees successfully defended its NAIA Region XIV crown with a 3-1 (30-24, 30-19, 29-31, 30-26) win over a resilient Flagler College team Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gym. SCAD, ranked No. 17 in the NAIA, receives the first automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament, held Nov. 30-Dec. 3, at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif.

SCAD (24-9) controlled the match winning the first two games with relative ease. The Bees seized control in game one after a pair of attack errors put SCAD up 11-10.

In game two, the Bees ran out to an 8-2 lead and then held off a 6-1 run by the Lady Saints and went on to win 30-19.

SCAD looked to have game three in hand, up 26-15. Flagler (20-15) ran off on an 8-1 run to cut the lead to 27-21 SCAD and broke match point on an attack error by the Bees, making the score 29-27. Flagler’s Jessica Pate (Jacksonville, Fla.) added back-to-back kills to knot the game at 29 and then Lizzie Gomez (Cooper City, Fla.) and Elizabeth Layfield (Gainesville, Fla.) recorded consecutive kills to push Flagler to the 31-29 win.

With momentum behind them, Flagler challenged SCAD the whole fourth game. The Bees took their biggest lead, 17-10, after Cristina Payne service ace. But like the third game, the Lady Saints would not go away. Flagler pared the score down to 21-19 after a kill by Layfield. Katie Pommier (Crescent City, Ill.) got the Lady Saint to within one, 21-20, after a service ace on the next play. SCAD never let Flagler get any closer as they took the game 30-26.

Frida Sigurdardottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) led the Bees with 18 kills. Katie Richardson (Strongsville, Ohio) added 16 kills off the bench and Payne tallied 15 more. Dina Lamanna led the defense with 14 digs and Ally Schramer (Maple Park, Ill.) added five total blocks to go along with her 46 assists.

Pate led the Lady Saints with a match-high 20 kills and she tacked on 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the year. Layfield added 10 kills and 13 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. Pommier tallied 22 assists for the Lady Saints.
