Saints down Barons, 74-67
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − 24th-ranked (NAIA Division II) Flagler College overcame a one-point halftime deficit and defeated Brewton-Parker College (NAIA Division I) of Mount Vernon, Ga., 74-67, in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at Flagler Gym. Flagler’s Jon Matthews (Daytona Beach, Fla./Atlantic HS) scored all of his game-high 18 points in the second half.
The game was closely contested throughout with 13 ties and nine lead changes. The Barons rallied from an early eight-point deficit (20-12) when they went on an 8-0 run to knot the score at 20. Bradley Wilson (Vidalia, Ga.) sank a three-pointer with 6:30 left to go in the half to put Brewton-Parker in the lead, 25-22. BPC would hold the lead until Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) converted a fast break layup to put the Saints ahead 32-31 with just 1:13 to go. Brewton-Parker’s Justin Bess (Miami, Fla.) quickly answered with a fast break layup at the buzzer sending the Barons into the locker room with a 33-32 lead, the first time Flagler has trailed at the half.
Flagler (3-0) was not able to get go breathing room from the pesky Brewton-Parker team until a 15-5 run over a 4:35 period late in the second half would give the Saints their biggest lead of the game, 10 points (72-62). Matthews scored eight of his 18 points in that frame.
Ben De La Cruz (Orlando, Fla./University HS) added 15 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Jozenville added 14 points, 13 rebounds and dished out four aassists forhis third double-double in three games. Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) scored eight of his 14 points in the opening half for the Saints.
Bess led four Brewton-Parker (4-1) players in double figures with 15 points. He also added nine rebounds. Bryan Jett (Hampton, Ga.) tacked on 12 points, seven rebounds and recorded a pair of blocks while Tony DeBerry (Douglas, Ga.) and Adrian Sing (Santo Domingo, D.R.) added 10 points each. Sing also tallied six assists.
The Barons outscored the Saints 32-20 in the paint and converted 14 Flagler turnovers into 13 points. However, Flagler canned 50% (10-20) treys. BPC only hit 4-of-21 from long distance.
Flagler will travel to Kissimmee on Tuesday to take on Florida Christian College at 7 p.m. The Saints have already defeated the Suns earlier this season, 107-29.
