Hatters top Lady Saints, 3-1
DeLAND, Fla. − DeeAnn Dempsey recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs to lead NCAA Division I Stetson University to a 3-1 (24-30, 32-30, 30-23, 30-28) win over Flagler College in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday night at the Edmunds Center.
Rebecca Orzechowicz added 12 kills and eight digs for Stetson (10-15) who won its fifth consecutive home match, its longest run in 18 years. Gina Iacona added 11 kills and nine total blocks while Melissa Muller helped pace the defense with 13 digs. Karla Readshaw and Rachel Miler registered 25 and 20 assists, respectively.
Elizabeth Layfield (Gainesville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) recorded a match-high 20 kills and added 17 digs for her 10th double-double of the year. Jessica Pate (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Clay HS) added 10 kills for Flagler (19-14) while Krista McAra (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island HS) tallied seven total blocks. Katie Pommier (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent Iroquois HS) tallied 28 assists and also recorded 15 digs for the Lady Saints.
Flagler hosts the NAIA Region XIV Volleyball Tournament this weekend. The matches start on Friday with top-seed Savannah College of Art and Design taking on No. 4-seed Webber International University at 4 p.m. Flagler, the No. 2-seed, opposes No. 3-seed Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 7 p.m. The winners will meet on Saturday at noon. The winner of the championship match will receive the region’s automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament.
