Dolphins swim past Saints, 100-89
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. − Jesse Kimbrough scored 25 of his game-high 31 points in the second half and added six rebounds and five assists to lead NCAA Division I Jacksonville University to a 100-89 win over Flagler College in a men’s basketball exhibition game Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium.
Both teams traded leads for the first 10 minutes of the game, but Jacksonville went on a 16-4 run over 3:14 of the first half to take a commanding 34-23 lead after an Antonio Cool dunk. Flagler would answer with an 18-6 run over 4:28 to gain a 41-40 lead with 2:54 remaining in the half on a Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) 3-pointer. The two teams would go into the break tied at 47 after a pair of Cool free throws with 10 seconds left.
Flagler would hang around with Jacksonville for most of the second half until the Dolphins reeled off a 13-3 run over 3:27 capped by a Kimbrough layup on a fast break giving JU a comfortable 93-79 lead with 2:56 to play.
A Kyle Cregan (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) got the Saints to within seven points (96-89) with 1:35 left in regulation, but Flagler could get no closer.
Cool added 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for the Dolphins while Bryan Hipsher and Marcus Allen each tallied 10 points coming off the bench. Jacksonville out-rebounded Flagler 50-35 and enjoyed a 48-24 advantage in points in the paint. The taller Dolphins dominated the offensive glass grabbing 24 rebounds leading to 19 second chance points. JU also shot a torrid 55.9% from the field in the second half.
Jon Matthews (Daytona Beach, Fla./Atlantic HS) led Flagler with 29 points, 13 of which came from the free throw line. He led all scorers at the half with 17 points. Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and Cregan tacked on 16 points.
Flagler returns to regular season action on Nov. 8 at home against Florida Christian College at 7 p.m.
