Lady Saints defeat Saint Leo

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Brittney Garmon (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine HS) recorded her second consecutive double-double as she scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and added five assists and five steals to lead Flagler College to a 65-58 win over Saint Leo University in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Flagler Gym. The game was an exhibition game for the NCAA Division II Lions.
 
Saint Leo never trailed in the first half and closed the half on a 15-4 run which made the score 38-29. The Lions would lead by as many as 12 in the second half, but a 14-3 run by the Lady Saints over 6:42 of the second half, capped by a 3-pointer by Garmon closed the gap to one point (50-49) with just 6:42 to play in regulation. After a bucket by Danielle Hoeffner (Tampa, Fla./Madison Central HS) gave Saint Leo a 52-49 lead, Sarah Hately (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports HS) canned a jumper to get Flagler back to within a point and she stole the in-bounds pass and dished off to Garmon to give the Lady Saints the lead,  53-52, with 5:23 left to play.
 
The lead would change hands two more times until Garmon sank a pair of free throws to give Flagler a 55-54 lead, which sparked a 12-4 run to close the game.
 
Saint Leo was held to only one field goal in the last five minutes of the game.
 
Hately added 18 points and recorded six steals and tallied five assists for Flagler (2-0). Meaggan Anderson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) chipped in with seven rebounds.
 
Marquita Fenn (Ft. Pierce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) led Saint Leo with 14 points and seven rebounds while Katie Koestner (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo HS) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hoeffner chipped in with 13 points and five assists while Amanda Holloway (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Lakes HS) added 10 points and seven rebounds.
 
Flagler College visits Reinhardt College in Waleska, Ga., Saturday at 4 p.m. Saint Leo hosts the University of Puerto Rico-Cayey on Nov. 16 at 5:30 in its season opener.
