Saints tame Lions, 82-72

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − After racing out to a 19-4 lead, 24th-ranked Flagler College needed everything to hold on in an 82-72 win over Emmanuel College of Franklin Springs, Ga., in a non-conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at Flagler Gym.
 
The Saints knocked down eight of their first 12 shots from the field leading to the 19-4 run while the Lions went 2-for-14. Emmanuel, though, reeled off an 18-5 run to draw to within a basket (26-24) with 5:59 to go in the half after Shavoyae Brown’s (Hartwell, Ga.) layup. The Lions closed to within a point (37-36 after a Tremaine Facison (Camilla, Ga.) layup with 54 seconds left.
 
The Lions took a 48-46 lead on a Ron Jackson (Chicago, Ill.) layup at the 15:30 mark in the second half and both teams traded leads the next two times down the floor. Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) gave Flagler the lead for good (52-50) when he drained a 3-pointer with 13:19 left to go.   

Borstelmann scored a game-high 22 points and sank five 3-pointers to lead Flagler (1-0) to its season opening win. Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) recorded his first double-double as a Saint with 14 points and 10 rebounds and he also dished out five assists. Ben De La Cruz (Orlando, Fla./University HS) added 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. The Saints defense in the paint blocked six shots on the night. Jon Matthews (Daytona Beach, Fla./Atlantic HS) chipped in with 12 points.
 
Jonathan Womack (Charlotte, N.C.) led Emmanuel (1-1) with 19 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Jackson added 16 points and six rebounds while Brown tacked on 11 points coming off the bench.
 
The Lions out-scored the Saints 38-14 in the paint, but the Saints knocked down nine 3-pointers (41%).
 
Flagler heads to Jacksonville for a 2 p.m. tip-off against the NCAA Division I Dolphins in an exhibition game. Emmanuel visits Allen University on Nov. 8 at 8 p.m.
