Lady Saints hold on in season opening win

Sarah Hately (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports HS) scored a game-high 22 points and added eight assists to lead Flagler College to a season opening 85-70 win over Reinhardt College of Waleska, Ga., in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday night at Flagler Gym.
 
The freshman guard scored seven points and tallied a pair of steals in the final two minutes of the game to secure the victory for Flagler (1-0). Brittney Garmon (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine HS) recorded a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds while Jamie Allenbaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Virginia Wesleyan) added 20 points for the Lady Saints. Meaggen Anderson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) added 10 rebounds and Melissa Anthony (Coppell, Texas/SE Missouri State U.) blocked four shots and grabbed eight boards.
 
The Lady Saints Saints led from tip to buzzer, and even took a 27-point (47-20) bulge into the break. But Reinhardt would go on a 15-1 run over an 8:19 stretch in the second half to cut the margin to 12 (59-47) with 5:58 left to play. The Lady Eagles defense held the Lady Saints to 0-of-11 from the field and nine turnovers during their run.
 
Reinhardt would get no closer than eight points (72-64) with 2:01 left to go and that’s when Hately took over for Flagler.
 
Josephine Reed (Lithonia, Ga.) led Reinhardt (0-1), a member of NAIA Division I and the Southern States Athletic Conference, with 18 points and 12 rebounds, all coming in the second half. Mandy Anderson (Blue Ridge, Ga.) added 16 points while Kim Brumfield chipped in with 13 points and Denise Kinsler (Alpharetta, Ga.) dropped in 10 points for the Lady Eagles.
 
Flagler will host Saint Leo University on Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. at Flagler Gym. Reinhardt plays at Covenant College Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
