Flagler sweeps FCCJ, 3-0
Elizabeth Layfield (Gainesville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) recorded a match-high 13 kills and racked up a hitting percentage of .444 and added seven digs to lead Flagler College to a 3-0 (31-29, 30-17, 30-19) win over Florida CC-Jacksonville in a women’s volleyball exhibition match Thursday night at Flagler Gym.
Jessica Pate (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Clay HS) added 11 kills, a team-high 12 digs and six block assists for Flagler while Melissa Bear (Orange Park, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) tallied seven kills and totaled eight block assists. Carrie Arnette (Keystone Heights, Fla./St. Johns River CC) added 20 assists while Katie Pommier (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent Iroquois HS) tallied 19 assists.
The first game proved to be the most tightly contested of the three. There were 10 ties and three lead changes before Flagler came away with a 31-29 win. FCCJ jumped out to a 5-1 advantage aided by three consecutive attack errors by the Lady Saints. The Stars would lead by as many as six points (13-7) before Flagler went on an 8-2 run capped by an attack error by Kavie Sturch (Middleburg, Fla.) that knotted the game at 15. The score would be tied seven more times until Pate scored a kill to give Flagler a 28-27 lead and Layfield followed with a kills to make it 29-27. FCCJ was able to fight off a game point and then tie the game at 29 on a Flagler attack error, but a kill by Pate and a double-block by Pate and Bear would win the game for the Lady Saints.
Flagler hit .469 in the second game, tallying 19 kills while committing only four errors on 32 total attempts.
Sturch led a balanced FCCJ attack with nine kills and also added six digs. Erin spake (Cape Coral, Fla.) recorded eight kills while Marette Kiernan (Gladstone, Australia) and Caitlin Culleton (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) each tallied six kills for the Stars. Amy O’Brien (Holiday, Fla.) led the defense with a match-high 19 digs and Kaitlin DiLuzio (Tallahassee, Fla.) registered 25 assists.
Flagler hosts Northwood University on “Senior Night” tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gym. Prior to the match, five seniors will be honored for their time and effort with the Flagler volleyball program. FCCJ takes on Pasco Hernando CC on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Melbourne.
