FCCJ downs Flagler on buzzer beater, 70-69
Terrosany Ingram (Tampa, Fla./Jefferson HS) sank a 3-pointer from just beyond the elbow at the buzzer to give Florida Community College of Jacksonville a 70-69 victory over Flagler College in a women’s basketball exhibition game Wednesday night at Flagler Gym.
Jessica Piggott (Tampa, Fla./Wharton HS) led the Stars with 13 points and nine rebounds coming off the bench. Latoya Drake (Baxley, Ga./Applin County) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Ashley Feagin (Jacksonville, Flas./Ribault HS) just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Shantel Ragin (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan HS) chipped in with 10 points. FCCJ out-rebounded Flagler 51-37 on the night.
FCCJ held Flagler without a field goal in the final 4:52 of the game, and out-scored Flagler 24-10 in that time span. Ingram hit a 3-pointer to put the Stars up 67-66 with 49 seconds left and Sarah Hately (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports HS) sank a pair of free throws to put the Lady Saints back up 68-67 with 44 second left to go. After a missed shot by Piggott with 25 seconds remaining, Caren Fiorillo (Meadville, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) gathered in the reboundsand was fouled. After a timeout by the Stars, Fiorillo sank the second of two free throws to give Flagler a 69-67 lead with nine seconds left. Piggott dribbled the ball up the floor and drew Garmon’s fifth foul with five seconds left. She front rimmed the first shot and then was forced to brick the second and Feagin found Ingram for the final shot.
Brittney Garmon (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine HS) led Flagler with a game-high 20 points and she added eight rebounds and four steals before fouling out with five second left in the game. Garmon sank 8-of-11 shot from the field. Hately added 16 points and eight assists for the Lady Saints while Meaggen Anderson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) chipped in with 12 points. Flagler shot 15.8% (3-19) from behind the 3-point line and was held to 37.3% (25-67) shooting from the field.
Flagler opens the regular season Saturday afternoon against Reinhardt College. The tip is set for 5 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
