Bobcats blank Lady Saints, 1-0

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Hayley Ferrell’s (Hampton, Ga.) goal in the 52nd minute was all the offense the Georgia College & State University needed in defeating Flagler College 1-0 in a non-conference women’s soccer match Sunday afternoon on “Senior Day” at Saints Field.

Ferrell booted in a deflection by the Flagler goalkeeper off a Natalie Thomas shot, and she put the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal to give GCSU (9-4-2) the lead. The Bobcats held possession for much of the second half and played a physical game.

Kristen Moore (Newman, Ga.) played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Bobcats and recorded two saves. Meghan Rothenberg (Knoxville, Tenn.) played the second half tallying three saves and preserved the shutout.

Kate Carver (Margate, Fla./Nova HS), one of nine Flagler (13-4-0) seniors playing in their final home match, collected four saves. Fellow Marissa McConihay (North Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens HS) took four shots and was marked well all contest long. Seniors Becky Hinmon (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS), Courtney Van Dyke (Maitland, Fla./Maitland HS), Melissa Simpson (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS), Breanne Mooi (Singer Island, Fla./Suncoast HS), Lauren Siatka (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run HS), Jessica Potter (Ormond Beach, Fla./Seabreeze HS) and Nicole Raymond (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run HS) along with Carver and McConihay were honored before the match.

Flagler out-shot GCSU 17-8 and held a 9-8 advantage on corner kicks.

Flagler will spend the next 11 days getting ready for the four-team single elimination NAIA Region XIV Tournament at Forsyth Park in Savannah, Ga. The regional will start with matches on Nov. 4 and the championship will be played Nov. 5 with the winner receiving the region’s automatic berth to the national championships. Georgia College & State University, an NCAA Division II member of the Peach Belt Athletic Conference, wraps up its regular season Oct. 29 at home against Armstrong Atlantic State University at 7 p.m.
