Flagler volleyball wins fifth-straight match and takes over lead in FSC

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Jessica Pate (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Clay HS) recorded 12 kills and added nine digs as Flagler College defeated St. Thomas University 3-0 (30-19, 30-14, 30-22) in a Florida Sun Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gym. The Lady Saints hit a season-high .337 for the match and with the victory; take over the lead in the conference by a half-game over idle Savannah College of Art and Design.
 
Elizabeth Layfield (Gainesville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) added 11 kills, a .444 hitting percentage and six digs for Flagler (18-20, 11-1 Florida Sun). Sarah Spraggins (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher HS) tallied nine digs and Katie Pommier (Crescent City, Ill./Iroquois HS) tallied 18 assists. Melissa Bear (Orange Park, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) hit .667 for the match and recorded two total blocks.
 
Flagler held St. Thomas to a -.032 hitting percentage in game one, en route to the 30-19 win. The Lady Saints went on a 7-0 run to pull away from the Bobcats. Up 8-7, Pate started the run with a cross court kill. The Bobcats could not get any closer than eight points the remainder of the game.
 
Flagler hit an impressive .500 in the second game and took a lead, 4-3, which they would not relinquish after Layfield’s kill. The Lady Saints rattled off five straight points to assume control.
 
In the third game, Cynthia Antomarchy (Hialeah, Fla.) collected three consecutive kills to put the Bobcats ahead 14-12. It was part of a 5-0 run by St. Thomas. The Lady Saints tied the game at 15 on a double block by Melanie Kirby (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley HS) and Pate. St. Thomas knotted the game at 18 on an Antomarchy block. Flagler would go on to score the next seven of eight points to put the game away.
 
Antomarchy led St. Thomas (6-15, 3-8) with nine kills and added seven digs. Vanessa Perez (Miami, Fla.) added eight kills and six digs. Charmelle Garcia (Miami, Fla.) tallied 18 assists.
