Flagler volleyball downs St. Francis, 3-1

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. −Elizabeth Layfield (Gainesville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) notched her ninth double-double of the season with an 18-kills, 15-dig effort to lead Flagler College to a 3-1 (30-28, 23-30, 30-18, 30-24) win over St. Francis University of Joliet, Ill., in a non-conference women’s volleyball match Wednesday night at Flagler Gym.

Layfield finished the evening with a .429 hitting percentage. Jessica Pate (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Clay HS) also notched a double-double, her third of the season, racking up 12 kills and 11 digs. Holli Strompolis (Neenah, Wisc./Neenah HS) recorded 12 kills for Flagler (16-10). Carrie Arnette (Keystone Heights, Fla./St. Johns River CC) added 26 assists and Katie Pommier (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent Iroquois HS) tacked on 25 more assists and nine digs. Krista McAra (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island HS) added five total blocks for the Lady Saints.

The play in the first game was even throughout. St. Francis took a 25-21 lead after a Flagler attack attempt went into the net. Flagler hung around, tying the game 27-27 on Layfield’s ace. USF would retake the lead, 28-27 and then relinquish it on the next rally with a ball handling error. Flagler took the lead, 29-28, on an attack error by St. Francis and then won the game on a ball handling error, one of 10 on the night for USF.

In the second game, St. Francis used a 12-3 run midway through the game and cruise to a 30-23 win.

Flagler opened game three on a 7-0 run and never looked back in a 30-18 victory.

Flagler again jumped out to a sizeable lead in game four, 18-9, and managed to hold off St. Francis late, 30-24.

Lisa Klein (Ladd, Ill.) led St. Francis (20-10) with 16 kills. Cassie Petroski (Chicago, Ill.) led the Lady Saint defense with 17 digs and Erica Gustafson (Darien, Ill.) tallied 34 assists.

Flagler returns to Florida Sun Conference action on Friday against Florida Memorial University. The match starts at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gym. St. Francis hosts the USF Big Guns Classic starting on Friday against St. Ambrose University and Taylor University.
