Lady Saints blank Bobcats, 5-0
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Five different Lady Saints scored goals to lead Flagler College to a 5-0 win over St. Thomas University in a Florida Sun Conference women’s soccer match Sunday afternoon at Bobcats Field. The win ties the program’s record for victories at 12 and the Lady Saints have shut out eight schools this season, including the last two in a row. Flagler also extends its winning streak to five-consecutive matches, the second that has been done this year.
Taryn King (Port St. Lucie Fla./SLW Centennial HS) got Flagler (12-3, 4-2 Florida Sun) on the board first when Melissa Simpson (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) found her open in front of the goal box in the 5th minute. Courtney Van Dyke (Maitland, Fla./Maitland HS) gave the Lady Saints some breathing room when she stole the ball from St. Thomas defender Lisa Garcia and booted the ball in off a deflection by the Bobcat goalkeeper which also grazed the bar.
Megan Bundrick (Mattituck, Fla./Mattituck HS) recorded her second goal of the season in the 33rd minute as she headed in Jessica Potter’s (Ormond Beach, Fla./Seabreeze HS) corner kick.
Marissa McConihay (North Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens HS) scored her team-leading 15th goal in the 68th minute when she headed in a cross from Potter to put Flagler up 4-0. Potter finished the scoring with her 12th goal of the season, in the 73rd minute, assisted by Van Dyke.
Kate Carver (Margate, Fla./Nova HS) tallied eight saves, earning her sixth shutout of the year.
Christiane Lessa tallied three saves and also yielded three goals in the first half for St. Thomas (4-9, 1-4). Maria Mora finished the second half with one save and gave up a pair of goals.
Flagler out-shot St. Thomas 25-18 and each team had four corner kicks.
Flagler will host the Savannah College of Art and Design Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in a non-conference match. Flagler finishes the conference season with a 4-2 record.
