Saints hold Cougars, 3-2
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | AnA.J. Martin (Solihull, England/Lyndon School) goal in the 54th minute proved to be the game winner as Flagler College held off Saint Xavier University of Chicago 3-2 in a non-conference menfs soccer match at Saints Field Thursday night.
Martin followed Andres Jaramillofs (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek HS) shot, which was blocked by a Cougar defender, and the ball found the back of the net to put Flagler (4-8) ahead 3-1.
Melchor Castro (Chicago, Ill.) made things interesting when he was virtually by himself in front of the Flagler goal when he received a pass from Marek Podczerwinski (Summit, Ill.) and booted the ball home in the 81st minute.
The Saints were able to hold off the Cougars in the remaining nine minutes, dodging four corner kicks by SXU in that time span holding them to one shot.
Sean Frye (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) scored the matchfs first two goals, his second and third of the season, five minutes apart from one another. His first goal came when he received a pass from Jaramillo just past the midfield line heading into the offensive half of the field. He chipped the ball over the keeper who had come out to play the ball, and then booted the ball in off the bounce. His second goal came right in front of the goal box as he received a beautiful pass from Sean Gormley (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee HS). Luke Sturgis (St. Augustine, Fla./Nease HS) also was credited with an assist on the play.
Jordan Holtz (Clermont, Fla./South Lake HS) tallied four saves for the Saints.
Chris Bartley (Park Forest, Ill.) scored the first goal for Saint Xavier (8-6) as he found a wide open goal off a pass from Paul Herbst (Cary, Ill.) in the 39th minute, drawing the Cougars to within a goal, 2-1. Chris Coccaro (New Lenox, Ill.) tallied seven saves SXU.
Flagler out-shot Saint Xavier 19-16 and the Cougars held a 15-7 advantage over the Saints in corner kicks.
Flagler will resume Florida Sun Conference play on Oct. 18 at Webber International University in a 4 p.m. match. Saint Xavier plays at No. 8 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Saturday night at 7 p.m.
