Lady Saints sting No. 15 Bees, 3-1

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Elizabeth Layfield (Gainesville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) recorded a team-high 14 kills and Jessica Pate (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Clay HS) added 13 more to go along with her team-high 17 digs in leading Flagler College to a 3-1 (30-27, 22-30, 30-25, 32-30) win over No. 15 Savannah College of Art & Design in a Florida Sun Conference volleyball match Thursday night at Flagler Gym. The match saw 27 ties and 21 lead changes. The loss snaps SCADfs 12-match winning streak.

In the fourth and deciding game of the match, there were 11 ties and seven lead changes. Flagler (12-9, 6-1 Florida Sun) took a 28-27 lead in the fourth game when SCADfs (16-6, 7-1) Emily Bumby (Claremont, Calif.) hit into the net. Layfield followed with a kill for the Lady Saints to push the game to 29-27 and Flagler serving match point. Frida Sigurdardottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) broke the first match point when she unloaded a kill from the front-middle cutting the score to 29-28. A block by Sigurdardottir and Ally Schramer (Maple Park, Ill.) on Layfieldfs next attempt knotted the game at 29. Bumby hit an attack wide to give the Lady Saints a 30-29 advantage and another chance at match point. Off the serve, Bumby followed through on a kill assisted by Dina Lamanna (Woodmere, N.Y.) to tie the game at 30. Bumby followed with a service error and then Sigurdardottir hit into a block by Flaglerfs Layfield and Krista McAra (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island HS) on match point.

Flaglerfs Katie Pommier (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent Iroquois HS) tallied 22 assists while McAra and Melissa Bear (Orange Park, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) each recorded four total blocks. Sarah Spraggins (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher HS) added 15 digs.

Cristina Payne (Seattle, Wash.) recorded a match-high 19 kills and Sigurdardottir added 16 more while Schramer registered 46 assists. Lamanna recorded a match-high 19 digs to lead the Bee defense. Sigurdardottir and Schramer each recorded five block assists.

The next match for Flagler College will be Friday at NCAA Division II power Florida Gulf Coast University at 7 p.m.
