Lady Saints down Sailfish, 3-2
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The Flagler College women’s soccer team opened the 2005 season with a 3-2 win over Palm Beach Atlantic University Thursday afternoon at Saint Field. The game was moved from Lantana to St. Augustine due to the impending Tropical Storm Katrina. The match was the season opener for both teams.
Marisa McConihay (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens HS) scored a pair of second half goals for Flagler (1-0) after leaving early on in the first half with an injury. Her goal at the 51:07 mark broke a 1-all tie and her goal 18 minutes later proved to be the game winner. Both goals were breakaway goals.
Taryn King (Port St. Lucie, Fla./St. Lucie West Centennial HS) put the Lady Saints on the board first after she netted a deflected shot in front of the goal 20 minutes into the contest. Jessica Potter (Ormond Beach, Fla./Seabreeze HS) assisted on King’s goal. Megan Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck HS) assisted on McConihay’s first goal and King assisted on McConihay’s second goal of the day. Kate Carver (Margate, Fla./Nova HS) notched six saves for Flagler.
Brandi Bianco (Palm Harbor, Fla.) knotted the game at 1-1 after she knocked in a goal from 10 yards out, beating the keeper to the left. Allison LaForte (Orlando, Fla.) booted in Palm Beach Atlantic’s (0-1) second goal off a rebound of a direct kick with 2:56 left to go in regulation.
