Warriors hold on in 71-70 win over Saints
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Tramaine Alexander’s 8-foot jumper with 1:07 sealed the 71-70 victory for Webber International University over Flagler College in a Florida Sun Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at Flagler Gym. The win for WIU snaps an eight-game losing streak against Flagler and its their first win at Flagler Gym since Jan. 29, 2000 (77-76).
In a game that saw 12 lead changes and seven ties the game came down to really one play. After Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) sank one of two free throws to give Flagler a 70-67 lead with 2:40 left, Webber countered when Alexander tipped in a missed jumper to get the Warriors back to within a point with 2:20 to go. After a Juan Alvarez steal of a Ben De La Cruz (Orlando, Fla./University HS) pass, Alvarez got his pocket picked by Flagler’s Lee Wise (Rockledge, Fla./Brevard Christian School). Wise darted up the court for a breakaway layup, but trailing him was WIU’s Sir Anthony McCaskill, all 5-foot-9 of him. When Wise, 5-foot-8, went up for the layup, McCaskill came up from behind and swatted the ball away to the left corner where the ball deflected off a Saint and went out of bounds. McCaskill fell to the floor and had to be carried off into the training room as he was clutching his left knee. Alexander followed, after a short delay, with the game winning shot.
Flagler had two chances to tie but a 6-foot jumper by Jozenville hit the front rim and was rebounded by the Warriors. With seven seconds left, Jon Matthews (Daytona Beach, Fla./Atlantic HS) tried a 3-pointer from the left corner, but the shot fell a foot short, but Jozenville collected the rebound but his momentum carried him out of bounds with less than a second left.
Halston Schaffer and Alvarez each tallied 15 points for Webber International (4-16, 2-1, Florida Sun). Alexander added 13 points coming off the bench and Jose Davila chipped in with 10 points.
Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) led Flagler (12-7, 0-3) with 14 points and Jozenville and Matthews each added 11 points. Wise chipped in with 10 points.
Flagler travels to Lake Wales on Jan. 25 to take on Warner Southern College at 7 p.m. Webber International visits Florida College on Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
