Saints tame Wildcats, 83-59

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. - Ben De La Cruz (Orlando, Fla./University HS) came close to setting a school record with his 22 rebounds and 11 points which led 19th-ranked (NAIA Division II) Flagler College to an 83-59 win over Johnson & Wales University in a non-conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at the Miami Country Day School Gym. Barry Craig holds the single-game record for rebounds at Flagler with 24 against Warner Southern College Nov. 23, 1974.

De La Cruz, a freshman center for Flagler (11-4), grabbed 14 of his career-high 22 boards in the second half. Kyle Cregan (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) scored a game-high 21 points on 4-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. The Saints sank 12 3-pointers and shot 44.4% from long range. Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) added 19 points and sank five triples and also had nine rebounds.

Bo Gooch (Apopka, Fla./Lake Brantley HS) hit a 3-pointer from the far corner to give Flagler a 42-39 lead with just 2:19 left in the first half. The Saints would not trail the remainder of the game.

Down 44-41 at the break, Ramon Echavarria opened the second half a layup to draw the Wildcats to within one, 44-43. Johnson & Wales could not draw any closer.

Flagler would go on to score the next 21 of 27 points over the next nine minutes and take control of the game. Borstelmann sank three 3-pointers in that run.

Brandon Partridge led Johnson & Wales (7-10) with 18 points, 10 of which came from the charity stripe. He was held to 4-of-16 shooting from the field. Echavarria added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Wildcats. JWU, a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), was held to 18.8% (6-of-32) shooting from the field in the second half.
