19th-ranked Flagler escapes with 85-80 win over EWC

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jonathan Sterling (Melbourne, Fla./Seminole CC) and Jon Matthews (Daytona Beach, Fla./Atlantic HS) each tallied 19 points in leading 19th-ranked (NAIA Division II) Flagler College to an 85-80 win over Edward Waters College in a non-conference men’s basketball Saturday night at the James Weldon Johnson Gym.
 
Sterling scored 12 of his 19 points in the opening half, staking Flagler (10-4) to a 42-36 lead at the break. Matthews scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half including scoring five points in a critical 11-4 run that helped the Saints seal the victory late in the closing half.
 
Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) and Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) each added 11 points. Jozenville grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists. J.P. Clark (St. Augustine, Fla./Nease HS) added 10 points coming off the bench.
 
Ulysses Bain scored a game-high 20 points and added six rebounds and six assists for Edward Waters (1-14). Jabari Dumas added 19 points and six assists while Rodnell Harris tacked on 13 points. Kareem Dennis chipped in 12 points for the Tigers.
 
Flagler travels to North Miami on Tuesday to face Johnson & Wales University at 8 p.m. at the Miami Country Day School. Flagler won the season’s first meeting 112-75 at the Southeastern University Christmas Classic in December.
