19th-ranked Saints thwart Bison, 79-76; St. Francis grounds Falcons, 65-55
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - A 12-1 run to close the game put 19th-ranked (NAIA Division II) Flagler College past NCAA Division III Gallaudet University 79-76 in the second semifinal of the Flagler College Invitational Tuesday night at Flagler Gym. The University of St. Francis from Joliet, Ill. defeated Notre Dame College of South Euclid, Ohio 65-55 in the other semifinal earlier in the day. St. Francis will take on Flagler at 8 p.m. in the championship game while Notre dame and Gallaudet will meet at 6 p.m. in the consolation game.
Down 75-67 with just 1:24 left to go in regulation, Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) cut down the lane for a layup to cut the deficit to six points and then hit another layup almost 90 seconds later to knot the game at 76 after a J.P. Clark (St. Augustine, Fla./Nease HS) steal. With 13 seconds left, Gallaudet’s Jon Mowl hurried a pass that was intercepted by Kyle Cregan (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) and Cregan drove in from the right side of basket and layed the ball in with just seven seconds left to put Flagler ahead 78-76. It was Flagler’s first lead since a Ben De La Cruz (Orlando, Fla./University HS) hit a layup to put the Saints up 10-9 with 15:48 to go in the first half.
Flagler trailed by as many as 18 points (41-23) with 19:36 to go in regulation.
Jozenville led Flagler (9-3) with a team-high 23 points and nine rebounds. Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) added 17 points while De La Cruz chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Robert Haney, Jr. led Gallaudet (6-3), a school for the hearing impaired, with a game-high 24 points and added five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Frank Jackson tallied 18 points and Luther Weedon came off the bench to add 13 points. Mowl tallied seven assists to go along with six points. Gallaudet had the backing of the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, located in St. Augustine.
