A memorial service was held Wednesday for Flagler College freshman Haven Shonio, 19, who died in a car accident on December 13, 2013, in Jacksonville.
Students, faculty and staff packed the College’s Flagler Room as many spoke about their memories of Shonio including her First Year Advisor Kim Bradley.
“I was her advisor but Haven needed very little help from me,” said Bradley, who also taught Shonio in a short story writing class. “She knew exactly what she wanted.”
Several friends spoke of the impact Shonio had on them after just four short months of friendship.
“She was a leader and an incredible person,” said freshman Sadie Owens. “I’m so grateful for time I had with her and truly wish I could have had more.”
An English major at Flagler, Shonio had been actively involved with Flagler’s Home Team, a campus club that brings students together to do outreach projects in the St. Augustine community. She also worked in the Flagler College mailroom as a work grant student.
Shonio was born September 24, 1994 in Morrisville, Vt. She attended Stowe Elementary and Stowe Middle School and graduated from Stowe High School in June of this year. Haven was the recipient of four scholarships.
She is survived by her parents, Barry and Penny Shonio; her sister, Hannah Shonio; maternal grandparents, Gary and Betty Lacey; and paternal grandparents, Marten and Barbara Shonio.
