Flagler College senior Amber James was recently awarded a $2,000 Florida Capitol Press Corps Barbara L. Frye Scholarship, an honor based on merit and dedication to a journalism career.
James serves as the treasurer of the Flagler College Society of Professional Journalists, Senior Editor of the Flagler College Gargoyle and Vice President of Phi Omicron, the Flagler College Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association Honor Society.
“The Barbara L. Frye Scholarship … gave me the boost I needed, both financially and confidence wise,” said James, who is currently interning at WJXT Channel 4 in Jacksonville. “I knew that I had people backing me and recognizing that I had great potential and a lot of talent.”
Barbara L. Frye was the Tallahassee bureau chief for United Press International for 38 years, and the first woman to work full time in the Florida Capitol Press Corps. She was also a member of the inaugural 1990 class of the Florida Press Association Hall of Fame.
