Flagler senior Kelsey Hughes has spent a good part of her college career playing sports and studying criminology. This past summer, Hughes got the best of both worlds as a security intern at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn.

Hughes, a member of the Flagler golf team, said she has wanted to work for ESPN for the past four years.

“I believe in ESPN’s brand, mission statement and their corporate leaders,” she explained.

Hughes applied for a position in ESPN’s Global Security and Safety Department. Out of almost 18,000 applicants, 70 interns were chosen, 43 of whom reported to the headquarters in Bristol.

Hughes also noted how unique and influential the ESPN culture was.

“The team is so creative, intelligent, energetic and experienced,” she explained. “They asked for my ideas, opinions and input on every level.”

Hughes was positioned across various department categories throughout the summer, moving around the office to gain experience and learn the responsibilities of each department in the corporate business. She found her experience to be fulfilling and informative.

“I learned the importance of adapting to a constantly changing nuclear speed industry,” Hughes said.
