Players line up for the 2011 Flagler College President's Classic on Sept. 23.

The 2011 Flagler College President’s Golf Classic and Roast of Flagler College President Dr. William T. Abare, Jr. raised $120,000 for the Flagler College Athletics Scholarship Fund, the most ever for a fundraising event at the college.

The golf tournament, held in September at the Dye’s Valley course in TPC Sawgrass, attracted 144 players.

“I was extremely gratified by the outpouring of support for the roast and the President’s Golf Classic,” Abare said. “I am very appreciative of the many friends of the college who supported these events and made it the most successful fundraising event in my ten years as president of the college. The net proceeds from both events will be used to augment scholarships for student-athletes who participate in our intercollegiate athletics program.”

The first place team with a low score of 49 was Brookes Burkhardt, Peter Burkhardt, Jeff Holleran and Pat Paolini.

The winning team’s names will be added to the Abare Cup, a trophy that was established by the Flagler College Board of Trustees in 2009 as a tribute to Abare, who has served Flagler College in various administrative positions since 1971. He has been president since 2001.

Aramark was the sponsor for the roast. The course sponsor for the golf tournament was TPC Sawgrass. The title sponsor was Prosperity Bank. The specialty gift sponsors were The Bailey Group, Baker’s Sporting Goods, Bozard Ford and TraveLynx. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm was the cart sponsor. Batson-Cook Construction was the lunch sponsor and PNC Bank was the beverage sponsor. Contests were sponsored by Total Office Solutions. Gold sponsors included Casa Monica Hotel, Orthopaedic Associates of St. Augustine, Converged Communications, Jack Wilson Family of Dealerships, AD Davis, HigherOne, ThompsonBaker, Burkhardt Sales and Service, Kresge, Platt & Abare, Alignment Partners, Inc. and ValleyCrest. The silver sponsors were Daniel Drysdale, Flagler's Legacy, Sign's Now and Massey Services. Hole sponsors included Chick-Fil-A, JimLin Properties, Inc., TouchPoint, Curtis 1000, DXM and Zaxby’s.

Before heading out to the course, players enjoyed a breakfast courtesy of Glenmoor/Vicar’s Landing.

“I am also grateful to Mr. Bill Hughes and his fine staff at TPC Sawgrass for the outstanding work they did in running the golf tournament at the Dye’s Valley course,” Abare said. “The course was in great condition, and the staff at TPC Sawgrass made the event memorable and enjoyable.”
