Flagler's Women of Vision welcomes new board members
Flagler College’s Women of Vision Advisory Board, which provides scholarships and opportunities for women who attend the college, welcomed six new members recently. They include Robin Borland, Letti Bozard, Araan Burnett, Lisa Chismark, Paula Fallon and Susan Joyner.
The new members, elected by majority vote of the 21-person Board, represent various constituencies, including friends of Flagler College, alumni, donors and community leaders from the greater St. Augustine area. “These new members will bring much additional talent, creativity and energy to the Women of Vision Advisory Board,” said Board Chair Robin Cooper. “We are delighted to welcome them and will greatly appreciate their contributions to what promises to be another very successful Power of the Purse fund-raising luncheon in 2018.”
To date, the Women of Vision Fund has raised over $270,000, established a Women of Vision Scholarship Endowment Fund and provided ten scholarships to eight women. Funds are raised through the annual Power of the Purse® event, which includes a silent auction, tributes and additional donations from attendees.
The role of young women in the college stretches back to its founding in 1968, when the college opened as a small, private college for women and welcomed 160 female students to its first class. In 1971, it officially became a co-educational institution. Today, 66 percent of the 2,574 Flagler students are women. Through the generosity of donors who care deeply about Flagler College, funding for named scholarships has increased 94 percent since 2004. At the same time, many talented and deserving female students still struggle to bridge the gap between the cost of attending college, their ability to pay, and the financial aid available. The Women of Vision Fund aims to fulfill this financial need.
The Fund was spearheaded in 2014 by Robin Cooper and Dr. Beverly Copeland Carmichael, a member of the college’s first graduating class and Vice President of Institutional Advancement.
