Dr. Margaret Finnegan has been awarded the Sr. Mary Delaney Award

Flagler College’s Dr. Margaret Finnegan has been awarded the Sister Mary Delaney Award by the Association of College Educators, Deaf/Hard of Hearing (ACEDHH) this year at their annual conference in Tucson, AZ from February 15-17.

The Sister Mary Delaney award honors the distinguished career of an ACEDHH member in teaching, research and service. This recognition is specific to teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Finnegan is the 20th person to ever receive this award.

"Dr. Finnegan has devoted her career to improving the field for children and teachers in deaf education. She has an outstanding legacy of professionalism, dedication, passion and is a pioneer of learning at Flagler College,” Flagler’s Education Department Chair, Dr. Sally Blake, said. “Her many accomplishments deserve recognition here and nationally. This is a career honor!"

Finnegan began teaching at Flagler College in 1976, and every aspect of her work is for the sake of deaf children, families, and teachers.

Finnegan’s career in deaf education spans 44 years, with experience in schools for the deaf as a classroom teacher and in higher education, preparing teachers of the deaf. She served as the Deaf Education Undergraduate Coordinator at Flagler College for 23 years, and has been the Deaf Education Master’s Program Coordinator for the last 2 years; a program she conceived and developed over the last decade. Under her leadership as the Deaf Education Program Coordinator, Flagler’s program has maintained continuous CED accreditation and State Approval since the initial approval in 1977. 

Looking beyond the impact she has had on teachers of the deaf across the United States, in 2011, Finnegan was a key player in the establishment of a school for the deaf in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Over the years, she has arranged service learning trips with Flagler students to work directly with the students at the school to provide opportunities for practical classroom experience while also providing professional development support for the local teachers. Finnegan has also taken on the task of mentoring a Fulbright Scholar who is doing research on teacher preparation programs in Brazil and in the US.
