The Power of the Purse® event was held on Thursday in the Ponce de Leon Hall at Flagler College. The funds from the attendance of about 350 alumni and supporters of the college, as well as silent auction proceeds, will go towards the mission of supporting scholarships. Six scholarships were awarded this year, exceeding previous years.

The annual event, now in its fourth year, serves as the signature event for the Women of Vision Advisory Board – a group of philanthropic women focused on ensuring scholarship and educational opportunities for female students at Flagler College. Originally a women’s college, Flagler celebrates 50 years this year and sees a legacy fund for women as a befitting tribute to the college’s roots.

“It’s hard to believe it’s the fourth year,” said Robin Cooper, chair of Women of Vision. Vice President for Institutional Advancement Beverly Carmichael, Ed.D., echoed that sentiment adding, “This year we have two unique speakers, more purses to bid on and more sponsors. Overall just more terrific community support.”

The event began with the opening of a silent auction in the Rotunda and Flagler Room. This year marked a record for the most in-kind donations of items for the auction. The highlights were a Mary Frances jeweled evening bag, a hot pink Electra bicycle and a vintage Louis Vuitton pet carrier bag.

Meghan Klein Toups and Lena Franklin were the keynote speakers, both focused on the theme of life balance, mindfulness and overall health and well-being.

The speakers presented as a duo and Toups concluded by applauding all those in attendance saying, “You chose to be here for a reason.”

As a recipient for a second year, Faith Wyluda addressed the audience with thanks, saying, “It takes a village - something I’ve learned in my years here at Flagler. I love this community because I found my place in it.”

Flagler College and the Women of Vision Advisory Board thank the following Power of the Purse® sponsors, including Bozard Ford Lincoln, Flagler Hospital, Delores and Allen Lastinger, Leonard’s, Forrest Inc., Burkhardt Sales and Service, The Bailey Group, Anh Vu, M.D., Richard and Kathleen Keller, St. Johns Law Group, Fields Cadillac St. Augustine, Beards Jewelry, Constellation Brands, Diamonds on the Plaza, Nettles Fine Jewelry, Island Life, Neff Jewelers, Blue Water Jewelers, St. Augustine Distillery, Smiles by Glenos, Monarch Studio, Artsy Abode, Hybrid Design, Old City Life, St. Augustine Social and The St. Augustine Record.
