Script lands Flagler student at Austin Film Festival

Mar 19, 2015
Ashley Ryan

Flagler winter graduate Ashley Ryan, a double major in Philosophy/Theology and Communication, has always been recognized for her academic research, but it was her creative work that took the spotlight this past fall.

Ryan’s screenplay, “Leave it to Cleaver,” was selected as a Second Rounder in the Teleplay - AMC One-Hour Pilot category of the 2014 Austin Film Festival. Only the top 15 percent of entries make it to that round, and there were more than 6,700 submissions.

“I was not expecting my script to be noticed, let alone make it to the second round,” she said. “In September when I got the letter I pretty much fell over in my front yard.”

Ryan said her motivation to enter the festival came from Lorraine Portman, a scriptwriting adjunct in the college’s English Department.

The script is a one-hour original pilot centered on secret government experiments in the 1950s. White males are injected with a serum that backfires and turns them all into zombies creating a gender reversal role among the housewives, and a civil rights movement among the African-American community.
