Recent alum wins top award in renowned acting competition

Oct 1, 2015
Mary Hickox

Flagler Theatre Arts graduate Mary Hickox earned her chance to shine in the spotlight by winning a top honor at a regional competition in Albany, Ga., this spring.

Hickox took home the National Partners of the American Theatre “Classical Acting Award,” which recognizes outstanding performance of material written before the 20th century. She also made it to the “final 16” overall, out of 250 contenders.

“I think a part of my brain turned off with emotion overload and surprise,” Hickox said. “I was overwhelmed and in shock, as this is also a competition that we are not necessarily groomed for at Flagler. No one expects to get passed on. If given the chance, we go to the competition and do the best we can, giving it our all and performing what we’ve rehearsed.”

The competition is part of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, and Hickox competed in region four, consisting of Alabama, Florida, Georgia and several other states.
