Information Literacy can be defined as:

The ability to 1) understand the nature and extent of information relevant to a number of specific subject areas of learning; 2) access the information effectively and efficiently; 3) evaluate the information and its sources critically, and incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base; 4) use the information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose; 5) understand the importance of the legal and ethical use of this information.

Information Literacy Accross the Curriculum (ILAC) at Flagler College

ILAC at Flagler College aims at enhancing the efforts of students, faculty, and staff at the discovery and creation of knowledge by preparing them to efficiently access, think critically about, and use information in the variety of media formats it presents itself, and to do this in a way best suited and most relevant to their academic pursuits in a number of subject areas.  The ILAC program thus seeks to nurture the intellectual growth of students so they might become information literate learners in their chosen fields, as well as information literate learners for life.

Emerging out of the Office of Library Services, the ILAC program supports the mission of the Proctor Library in its efforts to enhance the instructional and educational mission of Flagler College. The principle means for this is the subject-area library liaison structure that seeks to cultivate collaboration with faculty of each department, and with the common goal of guiding students through their experience of the information, research processes, and methods particular to each field of specialization.

Departmental Liaisons

Each academic department at Flagler College is assigned a librarian who functions as the library's liaison to that department. The library liaisons seek collaborative relationships with faculty in order to determine how best to meet the research needs of the students -- to develop and reinforce students' IL skills within the respective disciplines and for use throughout their lives. In addition, the library liaisons act to coordinate collection development efforts with faculty and maintain online, subject-specific resource guides that highlight materials and resources available through the Proctor Library. See the roster below to contact a department's library liaison.

Subject-Specific, Need-Based, and General Instruction

The Reference & Instruction Librarians at the Proctor Library are happy to offer library research instruction to faculty and their students with an eye toward enhancing student learning in each particular field of study.  Ideally, instruction design is struck as a department liaison meets with a faculty member to discuss the learning outcomes of a particular research assignment. We understand that the best way to ensure students become and remain life-long learners is to work collaboratively with faculty in constructing relevant and timely instruction that is geared to students’ specific information needs.

Instruction sessions are often held in the Proctor Library, room 200 on the second floor. Instruction can also be offered in the classroom. Liaisons may as well offer instruction on the use of the Voyager catalog, particular databases, and on specialized resources relevant to a particular discipline.

In the interest of best practices for student learning, research instruction sessions will not be scheduled unless the leading faculty member of the course is present on the day of instruction thus, ensuring a comprehensive session while maintaining student motivation.

Please contact your liaison or download the instruction request form if you are interested in scheduling an instruction session for your class.

Student-Centered Learning

The core of our instruction is student-centered learning. Thus, it is our goal to provide instruction to students that is both relevant and engaging, and that helps nurture an authentic student-centered learning environment. In order to reach this goal, the Liaison's emphasis is on (1) faculty-outreach to promote collaboration, (2) professional development in methods of teaching & learning, and (3) personal enhancement of knowledge in various subject areas. Liaison's are prepared to assist faculty with course-related research design and instruction that will promote learning outcomes and help ensure a successful learning experience for both students and faculty.
