How to Use ProQuest Historical Newspapers

ProQuest Historical Newspapers offers access to archived editions of the Christian Science Monitor, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. Since the search interface is the same for each of these newspapers, the New York Times historical database will serve as an example in this guide.

1. Begin by accessing the main database page from the Library homepage by selecting the "Articles & Databases" link:

2. Choose The New York Times (ProQuest Historical Newspapers) from the alphabetical list of databases:

3. The main search page is shown in the screenshot below. The easiest way to search is to enter in a keyword(s) and select a date or date range to begin a search.

4. As an example, let's say you want to find articles written about the Pearl Harbor attack that occurred on December 7, 1941. Enter in the search terms and select a date, say 12/08/1941, to see the articles written on the day after the attack:

5. The results appear in the next screen. To access an article, click on the title link or the link for "Article image - PDF":

6. A PDF image of the article is displayed in the next screen. Note the ability to print, e-mail, or cite the article, as well as the ability to mark the document, which will save it in a folder so you can go back to the results and look at other articles:

7. Marked documents appear in the "My Research" folder at the top of the screen. To mark other articles that appear on the results screen, place a check in the boxes to the left. Clicking on the "My Research" folder will show all of the articles you have marked (see screenshot in #8):

8. On the page with your saved documents, note the links that allow you to create a bibliography, e-mail yourself the documents, export citations, or create a web page with links to all of the articles you have saved:

Lastly, be sure to check out ProQuest Historical Newspapers' extensive help section on its own website.
