Issues and Controversies provides up-to-date, in-depth and objective information on approximately 600 current topics, combining objective analysis and clear explanations of opposing points of view. Chronologies, illustrations, maps, tables, sidebars, bibliographies and contact information augment the balanced coverage of current and historical events.
1. Begin by accessing the main database page from the Library homepage and select the "Articles & Databases" link:
2. Choose Issues and Controversies from the alphabetical list of databases:
3. On the next screen, select the link for Issues and Controversies in order to be taken to the main search page:
4. The main search page provides a number of options for searching. Looking at the circled functions and moving clockwise from the top left, take note of: 1) the ability to search by keyword; 2) accessing topics for issues in the headlines; 3) locating pro vs. con point of views for different issues; and 4) a subject index to access resources by subject:
5. Say you wish to locate a document spelling out both sides of the abortion issue. Since "Abortion" is not listed under the header for "Issues: Pro and Con", then select the link for "More":
6. The abortion topic happens to appear first on the next page (due to the issues being alphabetized). Use the link "Click here" to access the document on the abortion debate. Also note the A-Z list at the top of the page that allows one to navigate to a particular issue alphabetically:
7. When the document is up on the next screen, note the icons at the top right that allow saving, printing, and e-mailing options. Also note the table of contents (seen circled) that allow you to jump to any section of the document, or simply scroll down the page to read the document from start to finish.
8. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to obtain citations in MLA and APA format:
In addition to current event related documents, Issues and Controversies also allows you to obtain historical documents such as the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. See the Proctor Library's news blog entry for more information about this.
