How to Use the Gale Virtual Reference Library

The Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) contains full text online reference books on the subjects of art, biography, education, environment, history, medicine, multicultural studies, nation and world, religion, science, and social science. This guide will provide an overview of its use.

1. Begin at the Library homepage and select the link for "Articles & Databases":

2. From the alphabetical list of databases, select the link for Gale Virtual Reference Library:

3. Searching the content of the GVRL is easily done by entering your keyword(s) into the search box and pressing "Search". Before searching the GVRL for the first time, you may want to press the "Show All" link to see all of the different encyclopedias that will be searched (see screen shot in part 4):

5. Since religion is one of the subjects covered in the GVRL, the following shows an example search on buddhism:

6. From the list of search results, select the article(s) that seems the most useful:

7. The article appears on the next screen. The "Tools" allow the user to print whatever part of the article is on the screen, e-mail the article to yourself, save it to a disc, or create a citation in MLA, APA, or Chicago, which can then be copied and pasted into a paper. Toward the bottom of the screen are links to the different sections of the article:
