How to Use CQ Weekly

CQ Weekly is useful for accessing current news and analysis on Congress and major public policy issues. It is also useful for tracking votes and legislation in Congress, locating recent Congressional documents and related material in full text, and learning more about members of Congress and the legislative process.

1. To use CQ Weekly, begin by accessing the main database page from the Library homepage by selecting the "Articles & Databases" link:

2. Select CQ Weekly from the alphabetical list of databases:

3. The opening page is seen in the next screen shot. The current weekly issue of CQ Weekly and its Table of Contents will appear in the middle of the screen. Also note the following search features, circled in red, and moving clockwise: 1) the date of the current issue being seen; 2) the ability to search floor votes by topic or date; 3) the ability to perform an advanced search for articles by topic or date; 4) a quick search box that allows keyword searches; 5) a drop down menu that allows a user to access any issue of CQ Weekly by date:

4. The "Floor Vote Search" allows a number of ways to search legislation in order to view how different members of Congress have voted. As seen in the circled examples below, the user may search by 1) words or phrases; 2) by selecting a topic from a drop down menu; 3) by specific bill number; 4) by date range; 5) and/or by chamber of Congress:

5. The "Advanced Search" feature allows the user to search for articles by using many of the same parameters as the "Floor Vote Search." Note that searches can be limited to committees, page number, and byline (or author):

6. Use the "Quick Search" box to conduct a keyword search. Wrapping your keywords in quotes, such as "financial bailout", will search for any documents in CQ Weekly where "financial bailout" appears as an exact phrase:

7. The search results appear next. Select any document or article by clicking on the title or sort all results in chronological order by clicking the up and down arrows seen circled:

8. After the article or document has been accessed, use the icons at the top right to print or e-mail. Also note the "CiteNow!" function that automatically creates a bibliographic citation in APA, MLA, or Chicago style:
