How to Use Britannica Online

The Encyclopedia Britannica exists in an online version called Britannica Online. Britannica Online is a valuable resource when it comes to researching general topics and getting background information. The article entries also contain bibilographies with suggestions for further readings on a topic. This guide provides an overview of its use.

1. Begin at the Library homepage and select the link for "Articles & Databases":

2. From the alphabetical list of databases, select the link for Britannica Online:

3. The main search page appears in the screenshot below. Simply enter in your search term or terms into the box and hit the Go button (also note that you can search the Merriam-Webster Dictionary & Thesaurus online).

4. As an example, let's say you want to find an entry on Tibet. Enter the term in the box and hit Go:

5. On the next screenshot where the results are displayed, note the following: to the left, you can sort the article entries by media, web sites, ProQuest, Ebsco, and by dictionary or thesaurus; in the middle are the encyclopedia results (the first hit is usually the main entry - see next step for more on this); to the right take note of media resources such as maps and photos:

6. On the page with the main entry and moving clockwise from the top right, take note of: the number of pages in the article entry; the ability to save, print, e-mail, or cite the article (in MLA or APA); and the Table of Contents, whose links allow you to jump ahead to any particular section in the article entry:
