All books held in the Proctor Library collection, whether they are in print or electronic format, can be located by using the online catalog called Voyager. This tutorial provides an overview on how to use Voyager to locate books in the Library.
1. Begin on the Library homepage and select the link for "Books & More":
2. This will lead you to the "Simple Search" screen for Voyager. A search can be initiated by entering a keyword term or terms in the box on the left hand side and then selecting a field to search from the drop down menu on the right hand side. Note that a number of different options are provided for conducting a book search. As an example, a search for John Steinbeck's novel East of Eden would be conducted the following way:
3. If the book is held by the Library, then the next screen should be the book record itself or a list of titles if more than one item shares the same title. In conducting a "Title" search, it is important to search using the exact title, or else the search will not bring up the specific book. Note how the book record will show the floor location, call number, availability status, and oftentimes a link to a Google book record:
4. To search for titles by a particular author, use the author's name as the search term in conjunction with the first name or initial of the first name, then set the search as an "Author Browse":
5. The next screen will show a list of authors. If the Library carries titles by an author, then a link will show up in the results. You may have to scroll forward or backward using the "Previous" or "Next" arrows if the author does not show up on the first page of results. Otherwise, select the link for the author's name:
6. The next screen will display the list of works by the author. Selecting any of the title links will bring up the record for that book:
7. If you would like to search for books on a specific topic, then use a keyword or subject search (see our subject search tutorial). For example, a keyword search on gun control would be done like this:
8. And the results:
9. A number of books in the Library collection are in the form of electronic books or e-books and can be accessed online. Anytime you see a book record with the location as "Electronic Resources" and the "Call Number" as either "ebrary" or "netLibrary", then the book is an e-book:
Tutorials exist to explain how each of the e-book systems work. See our tutorials for netLibrary or ebrary for more help.
Lastly, Voyager has its own brief tutorial to get you started on how to search for books.
