The AP Images database is one of the world’s largest collections of historical and contemporary imagery. This guide describes how to use AP Images to search for historical and contemporary photographs.
1. Begin at the Library homepage and select the "Articles & Databases" link:
2. Choose AP Images from the alphabetical list of databases:
3. On the opening page for AP Images, please note the following functions (circled in red), moving clockwise from the top left: 1) keyword search box and drop down menu with options to limit to a specific time frame, 2) an "Advanced Search" function to allow searching by photographer, event, people, city, state, country, etc., 3) "Search Tips", 4) "Categories" with links to look at images in Sports, International News, etc., and then usually current images in the realm of 5) "International News" and 6) "US Domestic News":
4. As an example search, let's say you wanted to obtain all AP photographs related to Afghanistan from the last 7 days. Enter the search term and set the drop down menu accordingly:
5. The next screen will contain the images. Select the image you are interested in by clicking on it. You will get a detailed record of the image and have the option to print or save it. Note that you can click through page after page of images:
6. Use the "Advanced Search" if you want to obtain images from a particular event in time. For example, to find photographs from the Apollo moon landing in July 1969, enter the keyword search terms and set the date using the boxes for "Created Between":
7. To see the full size image and background information of a photograph that is of interest, use the mouse to click on the photograph:
8. Use the scroll bar to see the rest of the record for the image:
