Francisco Pareja: Missionary and Linguist

This presentation considers the dual roles of Fr. Pareja's life in Spanish Colonial Florida: that of missionary and of linguist. Through an analysis of his multiple works, an understanding of his religious and scholastic background are brought to light. Additionally, his works reveal that the documentation, understanding and "standardization" of the Timucuan language was in part the product of a collaborative relationship between Pareja and other Franciscan missionaries stationed among the Timucua.
