Cycles of Celebration: High Holy Days in the Franciscan Missions of Northern New Spain

Seventeenth and eighteenth-century celebrations for first and second-class feasts in the Franciscan missions of Northern New Spain involved much preparation and participation by most members of mission communities. This paper will examine the celebrations, as well as the ways in which festivities for Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, Corpus Christi, and major saints' days refashioned time, social space, and corporate identity.
