The online journal Perspectives on Undergraduate Research (PURM) published by Elon College defines Undergraduate Research “ ….. to include traditional research and creative endeavors that result in a product with potential for dissemination in an appropriate peer-reviewed forum”.
The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) defines undergraduate research as “an inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline”. In addition, CUR states that “effective mentoring is a critical ingredient in successful undergraduate research experiences”.
Our undergraduate research students conduct independent or collaborative research and creative work under the direction of faculty members, and even in several cases mentor younger students interested in assisting upper-level students. Undergraduate research can and is undertaken in every academic discipline.
In large part because this is an undergraduate-only institution, but also because of our faculty members’ commitment to teaching – Flagler students are notable for the successes of our undergraduate research program. Our students have received awards for top papers presented at research conferences, internships in the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates both nationally and internationally, journal publications, and exhibit their paintings in national and international exhibitions.
Begin by learning about your professors’ research pursuits, and discussing those you may be interested in with that professor. But also be sure to talk with other students, many of whom may already be actively participating in undergraduate research. You might also be required to undertake research as a course requirement, which may upon completion lead to further undergraduate research opportunities. Once you have determined which professor and/or research interest you want to pursue, make an appointment with that professor to discuss how you might begin to embark on a research program.
