Study Abroad - Spain

Program Description

This study abroad will provide an excellent opportunity for students to explore, experience, emerge in, study, and appreciate a culture, language, environment, political system and social society other than their own. There are many advantages to taking a trip to Southern Spain because it is an incredibly diverse part of the country with a rich political, social, cultural, and religious history. There are specific cultural ties to Granada for St. Augustine as well. For example the Alhambra, for which a small scale replica exists in St. Augustine, is located there. Additionally St. Augustine is celebrating its 450th anniversary which marks the arrival of the Spanish explorers. What better way to celebrate than to immerse oneself in the culture of the original settlers of the city!

The trip will have two main components. The first will include a course that will be taught by Dr. Brenda Kauffman. The course will be an extension of the spring class that will be required for the students to take in spring 2015. The course will focus on the historical and political elements of Granada and the surrounding area. Three time periods will be studied including the time of the Moors in Southern Spain, the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, and the rule of General Franco. The second component is a Spanish language course that will be provided by the host institution don Quijote and is include in the program price. This study abroad program is worth 7 credits.
