Vandals

by Richard Nuzback

The dumpster where I work has a portrait
of Tom Waits gazing upward. At the stars
or at garbage, I can’t say for sure, but
it’s still a better view than all of ours.
Too often a vandal’s so-called misdeeds
say what we don’t want to think of as true.
The side of my movie theater reads,
“the government does not care about you.”
I didn’t need a reminder, but still,
at least somebody out there feels the slight.
I could just vandalize a dollar bill,
And it’d be the best thing I’d ever write:
no matter what I think or what I say,
at least I know it won’t be thrown away.
