Virginia's Wish

by Megan Sullivan

One foot into the icy water
has me in a nightmare of the future.
Third person takes over
as she reaches for the shore,
waste time to keep everyone waiting.
Second foot in the current
past tense in the present.
I used to have you by my side,
you didn't give up on me then.
Future tense, with rocks in my pockets,
I am a disaster about to happen--
an accidental tragedy--
the explanation they will use.
Lie by omission,
only I will know the truth.
Omniscient,
omnipotent
as I sink to the bottom
I wish you all the best.
