CARE (Campus Assessment, Referral, and Evaluation) exists as a proactive, multi-disciplinary program in support of the safety, health, and well-being of all students, faculty, and staff. Its goal is to provide a structured positive method for addressing student behaviors that may adversely impact the college community, and the mission of the College, and may involve mental health and/or safety issues. The CARE consists of a group of qualified college professionals who are likely to become involved with and/or receive information pertaining to a student of concern.
The CARE provides a means by which members of the college community may refer concerns related to the above. The CARE may then assess the risk associated with these concerns and, in cooperation with other appropriate college teams or offices, formulate an appropriate response when an individual’s behavior and/or statements generate concern that they may present a threat to the health or safety of self or others.

Reasons for submitting a concern to the CARE include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Behaviors or threats (direct or implied) that may entail the risk of harm to self or others, including but not limited to self-injurious behavior/suicidal thoughts or attempts, aggression toward others, bullying, stalking, and hazing.
- Erratic behavior (including online activities), that disrupts the mission and/or normal proceedings of students, faculty, staff, or community, including but not limited to weapons on campus, significant inappropriate disruption to the community, disturbing electronic media postings, inappropriate behavior in which safety is compromised.
- The belief is that a student’s emotional well-being is deteriorating or at significant risk.
- Substance abuse or a mental health concern resulting in the need for medical intervention, including transportation to the hospital.
- A CARE referral may be submitted due to general concerns about a student’s emotional well-being, or concerns about treatment to one’s self or to others by a student.
- It is not necessary that the person submitting a concern be absolutely certain as to whether or not a submission is appropriate; however, submitting a concern should never be done for malicious or retaliatory reasons, and should be based upon genuine concern.
