Learn about Henry Morrison Flagler who rose from poverty to become one of the wealthiest and most influential men of the 19th and early 20th centuries. As cofounder of Standard Oil, he amassed a fortune which he used, beginning in 1885, to develop the east coast of Florida. His accomplishments in Florida began with the building of the Hotel Ponce De Leon and culminated with the completion of the overseas railway to Key West in 1912.
